Photographer Mats Bäcker brought me in as movement director for a shoot in Kungsbacka Teater. A day of working with bodies in a theatrical space, shaping how dancers moved in front of the camera. The job was to understand what the photographer is looking for and translate that into physical direction, finding the quality of movement that gives the frame what it needs.
Alongside the movement direction I assisted Mats with the lighting setup, rigging, adjusting, reading how the stage light fell across the space and the bodies in it. Working on both sides of the process gives you a particular sense of how a shoot is built: the image is already being composed before anyone takes a step.
The photographs were made for Rum för dans, a platform for contemporary dance in the Gothenburg region, and will be used across calls for projects, promotional material, and documentation.
