Alan Lucien Øyen — Pina Bausch Tanztheater Wuppertal

I was invited by Adolphe Binder, then artistic director of Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch, to document the creation process of Bon Voyage, Bob…, a new full-length work commissioned from Norwegian director and choreographer Alan Lucien Øyen. It was one of the first pieces created for the company by an outside choreographer since Pina Bausch built it in 1973.

We had one day in the studio. The brief was to capture the work in progress: the process, before anything had been resolved. Øyen's way of working is open and collaborative, and the images were made inside that.

The piece premiered in 2019, co-produced by Théâtre de la Ville Paris, Sadler's Wells London, and the Norwegian National Ballet. Thirty-six dancers from three generations of the company. You feel the history of the place as soon as you walk in.
